What is Niacinamide

A chosen active, for a reason

Niacinamide is a form of Vitamin B3 and one of skincare's most versatile ingredients. Rather than focusing on just one skin concern, it works across several parts of everyday skin health — helping support the skin barrier, improve the appearance of uneven tone, and keep skin looking balanced and healthy.

What makes Niacinamide particularly useful is that it fits into different kinds of routines. In a brightening routine, it helps improve the look of uneven pigmentation. In a barrier-focused routine, it supports the skin's natural defences and helps reduce moisture loss. For oilier skin, it can also help reduce the appearance of excess shine by supporting more balanced sebum levels.

MIRAVA uses Niacinamide across the routine rather than treating it as a single-purpose brightening active — from cleansing and daily hydration to targeted serum care and daytime protection.

The Science

How Niacinamide works on skin

Niacinamide is a water-soluble form of Vitamin B3 that participates in the skin's NAD/NADP coenzyme systems — molecules involved in cellular energy production and maintaining normal cellular processes.

For the skin barrier, topical niacinamide has been associated with improved barrier function and reduced trans epidermal water loss. This matters because a stronger barrier helps skin hold onto moisture and remain more comfortable in everyday conditions.

For uneven tone, research suggests that niacinamide can reduce the transfer of melanosomes — pigment-containing structures — from melanocytes to surrounding keratinocytes. In clinical research, topical niacinamide has therefore been studied for reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation and improving overall skin tone.

Niacinamide has also been studied for sebum regulation. This makes it useful in routines where excess shine and an uneven-looking complexion are concerns, without relying on aggressive stripping of the skin.

The result is a genuinely multi-functional active: barrier support, tone refinement and skin balance in one ingredient.
