Why Knowing Your Skin Type Matters
Using the wrong products for your skin type can lead to breakouts, dryness, or irritation. Understanding your skin type is the first step to building an effective skincare routine that truly works for you.
The 5 Main Skin Types
1. Normal Skin
Normal skin is well-balanced — not too oily, not too dry. It has minimal imperfections, small pores, and a radiant complexion. If your skin feels comfortable throughout the day without much maintenance, you likely have normal skin.
2. Oily Skin
Oily skin produces excess sebum, leading to a shiny appearance, enlarged pores, and a tendency toward blackheads and breakouts. Look for lightweight, oil-free, and non-comedogenic products.
3. Dry Skin
Dry skin lacks moisture and can feel tight, rough, or flaky. It may appear dull and is more prone to fine lines. Rich, hydrating products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and shea butter work best.
4. Combination Skin
Combination skin features an oily T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) with normal or dry cheeks. This is the most common skin type and requires a balanced approach — lighter products on oily areas and richer ones on dry patches.
5. Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin reacts easily to products, environmental factors, or stress. It may appear red, feel itchy, or sting after product application. Opt for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic formulas with soothing ingredients like aloe vera and centella asiatica.
How to Determine Your Skin Type
Try the "bare-face test": cleanse your face, pat dry, and wait 30 minutes without applying any products. Then observe — if your skin feels tight, it's dry; if it's shiny all over, it's oily; if only the T-zone is shiny, it's combination; if it feels comfortable, it's normal; and if it feels irritated or red, it's sensitive.
